Now entering its eigth year

The 2018-2019 Madeline Schatz-Harris Concerto Competition takes place on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at a private residence in Kailua-Kona. The competition features young performers from all over the state of Hawai‘i, of all age ranges, up to the age of eighteen. This season’s competition focuses on the piano, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments.

Winners of this season’s competition will perform with the Kamuela Philharmonic at Kahilu Theatre during its winter concert En Pointe Brilliance on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 4 pm.

Members of the general public who wish to attend the Concerto Competition in Kona, please email us.

To honor our founder and Conductor Emeritus, the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra named our annual concerto competition the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition.

In just a few short years, the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition has become a popular and beloved part of the performing arts community in the state of Hawai‘i. Taking place on Hawai‘i Island, but often drawing in students from many neighbor islands, the competition is an essential part of the Kamuela Philharmonic’s mission, as well as the focal point for one of our season concerts at Kahilu Theatre.

Young players up to the age of 18 from the state of Hawai‘i are eligible to compete.

There are three age groups:
• 12 and under
• 13-15
• 16-18

During the competition, each contestant is asked to perform one movement of a concerto from memory, with piano accompaniment, before a panel of judges.

Winners from each age group are selected to perform their piece during one of the season concerts at Kahilu Theatre with the entire Kamuela Philharmonic. Winners also receive their awards at that performance.
