Unstoppable Youth

The Madeline Schatz-Harris Concerto Competition

Now entering its seventh year

The Madeline Schatz-Harris Concerto Competition will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at a private residence in Kona. Featuring performers of all age ranges who hail from all over the state of Hawaii, this year’s competition is focused on Strings.

Members of the general public who wish to attend the Concerto Competition in Kona, please email us.

To honor our founder and Conductor Emeritus, the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra named our Annual Concerto Competition the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition.

In just a few short years, the Kamuela Philharmonic’s Annual Youth Concerto Competition has quickly become a popular and beloved part of the performing arts community in the state of Hawaii. Taking place on Hawaii Island, but often drawing in students from many surrounding islands, our Annual Youth Concerto Competition is a key part of our organization’s mission, as well as the focal point for our most popular concert of the season.

Young string players up to the age of 18 from the state of Hawaii are eligible to compete this year.

There are three age groups, 12 and under, 13-15, and 16-18. During the competition, each contestant will be asked to perform one movement of a concerto from memory, with piano accompaniment, before a panel of judges. A winner from each age group will be chosen, and will perform their piece in front of a large audience with our full orchestra in our January 28, 2018 concert. We will then present to them their award and a cash prize.
